Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the yeast, sugar, and 2 tbsp of the warm water (100ยฐF/38ยฐC). Let it sit for 10 minutes until frothy and bubbly. Stir before using.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, oregano, and salt. Make a well in the center, add the yeast mixture, the remaining water, and olive oil. Mix to form a rough dough.
  3. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead for 8โ€“10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the risen dough, transfer it to a floured surface, and knead briefly. Divide into 2 portions and shape into loaves. Arrange on greased baking sheets, shaping into straight or circular loaves as preferred.
  6. Use a serrated knife to make a ยฝ-inch (1 cm) deep slash along the top of each loaf. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 400ยฐF (200ยฐC). Bake the loaves for about 25โ€“30 minutes, until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped on the bottom.
  8. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Note

Tips for Success:

  1. Check Water Temperature:
    • Ensure the water is lukewarm, around 100ยฐF (38ยฐC). If it's too hot, it may kill the yeast; too cold, and the yeast won't activate properly.
  2. Adjust Flour as Needed:
    • Depending on your environment, you may need slightly more or less flour. Add small amounts gradually during kneading if the dough feels too sticky.
  3. Create a Warm Rising Environment:
    • If your kitchen is cold, let the dough rise in the oven with the light on (but the oven turned off) or near a warm, draft-free area.
  4. Enhance the Flavor:
    • Add a teaspoon of garlic powder or a pinch of red chili flakes to the dough for a more robust flavor.
  5. Check for Doneness:
    • Besides the hollow sound when tapped, you can insert an instant-read thermometer into the center of a loaf; it should read 190โ€“200ยฐF (88โ€“93ยฐC) when fully baked.

Serving Suggestions:

  1. As a Side Dish:
    • Serve warm oregano bread alongside soups, stews, or pasta dishes. It pairs particularly well with minestrone, tomato soup, or spaghetti with marinara sauce.
  2. With Dips:
    • Slice the bread and serve with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, hummus, tzatziki, or herbed butter.
  3. For Sandwiches:
    • Use the bread for hearty sandwiches or paninis. Its herby flavor complements fillings like grilled vegetables, mozzarella, and pesto or roasted turkey with avocado.
  4. Toasted or Grilled:
    • Toast slices and top with fresh tomato bruschetta or melted cheese. You can also grill it lightly for a smoky, crispy texture.
  5. Breakfast Option:
    • Spread with butter and jam or honey for a simple but delicious morning treat.
  6. Freezing and Storing:
    • If you bake extra loaves, let them cool completely, then wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and aluminum foil. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months. Defrost at room temperature and warm in the oven before serving.
